Richard A. Haskell

1966 - 1980

Richard was born on June 8, 1966. He was a student in the Bourne school system at the time of his death.

Ricky was the son of Ronald and Nina Haskell. He lived in Buzzards Bay with his three brothers: Mark, Scott, and Eddie.

Ricky enjoyed boating, art, writing, poetry, and archaeology
with his Dad. He played baseball for the Bourne Little League Angels and was a member of the Bourne Little League All Star team.

Ricky had a great interest for the sea. He was a 1st Class Petty
Officer in the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corp., Marathon Division. In 1979, he was named League Cadet of the Year. The Richard A. Haskell Memorial Swim Meet is held each year at the Mass Maritime Academy. Ricky's dream was to attend Annapolis and to pursue a career in the U.S. Navy. He wrote the poem "Freedom" and a Sea Cadet prayer which reflect his love for the sea. The poem and prayer appear in this memorial book.

Freedom
by Richard Haskell

Down by the water,
on a cool spring night
the sun was setting
in the fading light.

Around the bend,
a ship did sail,
with men on the rigging
and along the rail.

They seem to be saying,
"We`re free, we`re free"
as they sail along,
the open sea.

Richard`s Prayer

Almighty Father, who guards against evil, whose influence is forever lasting and whose example is divinely followed; help me in my quest for everlasting peace and help to defend me against wickedness in both theory and practice. Guide me through the stages of evil and tyranny and help me to appreciate the goodness of which thou offers. Remind me of my purpose, of my goals, and of my accomplishments in both Sea Cadets and daily life. Help me to remember my responsibilities to my country, to my family, to the Sea Cadet Corps, and to my shipmates. For these, Oh Lord, I ask to obtain the answer to my prayer to follow whose guidance and forgiveness is wisest of all Jesus Christ our Lord.
